What is the difference between “lot” and “heat” traceability?

ASTM B846 provides definitions for many terms used in the copper industry including the ASTM copper standards and specifications. From ASTM B846, “lot” and “heat” are defined as follows:

  • Lot: A collection of like product (i.e. same alloy, temper, and dimensions) produced under uniform conditions from which a sample is to be drawn for inspection or testing, or both.
  • Heat: A lot of cast product that shares, and can be identified by, a common chemical analysis result.

In essence, a lot could potentially include more than one heat but maintain its traceability as a lot. If lot or heat traceability is required, please inform your Customer Service Representative before the product is quoted.
